Just bought one 1080p hdmi to vga cables last week so my wife could hook up our apple tv to a projector.  add that when I get HDMI to a decent resolution that the sides are way off. 
The top and the left side are to far outside the monitor''s capacity. So the screen runs of the left side and the top too. I don't know how far this problem is in the system but it is very noticeable on any tty , so I believe it extends past anything to do with a GUI.
